New framework for HE published by Government

Last Tuesday saw the launch of the Government’s new framework for higher education. ‘Higher Ambitions’ focuses on the role that universities will play in the future to aid economic recovery and progress.The framework focuses on activities around widening participation, which includes encouraging universities to consider contextual data in the admissions process; creating more part-time, work-based and foundation degrees; and maintain teaching and research excellence. Review of student fees announced

Lord Browne of Madingley has been appointed as chair of the Independent Review of Higher Education Funding and Student Finance. He will lead a group to analyse the challenges and opportunities facing higher education, and their implications for student financing and support. The review, which is due to report in 2010, will take into account the goal of widening participation, affordability and the desirability of a simplification of the student support system. Update on student finance resources

The Student Loans Company (SLC) is working on a new suite of materials providing guidance on student finance. This includes: ‘Student finance in 3 easy steps’ (replacing the parent pack), a ‘Practitioners’ pack’ (replacing the advisors’ pack) and an updated version of the ‘Fast Facts’ flyer. DCSF launches new IAG strategy

A new strategy for the delivery of Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG) has been unveiled by Minister for Children, Schools and Families, Ed Balls. ‘Quality, Choice and Aspiration – A strategy for young people’s information, advice and guidance’, builds on the Schools White Paper, and is informed and influenced by the ‘Fair Access to the Professions’ report, published this summer.
